A Sooke, B.C., youth has been arrested and charged after online chats with a U.S. teenager who allegedly made school shooting threats, RCMP say.

RCMP said in a Monday statement that the youth — whose age was not provided — is a student at Edward Milne Community School, a secondary school in the south Vancouver Island community around 107 kilometres southwest of Vancouver.

According to police, the investigation into the case began last July — when the U.S. Homeland Security unit of the Louisville, Ky., police department began investigating alleged school shooting threats from a 15-year-old in their area.

As they investigated further, police said it emerged the 15-year-old was regularly chatting with a Canadian youth over the Discord chat platform — and that person was in the Sooke area.

On March 13 — nearly eight months after the investigation into the Kentucky teenager began on July 19, 2025 — RCMP were contacted and they launched an investigation, according to the statement.

They say the Sooke youth was arrested at their home without incident on Saturday, and police have seized electronic devices as they continue to investigate.

The youth has been charged with conveying threats, and their identity is protected under court-ordered publication bans.

Adults charged with the offence of conveying threats can be sentenced with up to five years in prison, according to the Criminal Code of Canada.

In the statement, RCMP Cpl. Alex Bérubé said police are working with international partners to “keep those individuals who [prey] upon instilling fear within their communities accountable.”
