An unmanaged shutdown can leave users stuck in old pools, treasury assets stranded and governance slowly becoming non-functional.
Balancer’s proposal tries to avoid that.
Rather than simply abandoning the protocol, contributors are discussing a staged process that would give liquidity providers time to exit and create a path for the DAO’s remaining assets.
Treasury Returns Could Matter For BAL Holders
The proposal also raises the question of what happens to treasury capital once a DAO no longer needs to fund ongoing development.
Returning those assets to token holders is one option.
That can sound attractive, but the details matter.
Which assets qualify, how claims are calculated and what liabilities remain all have to be worked out.
For now, Balancer has not reached the point of execution.

Then the Snapshot vote.
If that passes, the protocol still has to carry out the wind-down safely.
It is a sobering story, but also a relatively mature one.
Crypto protocols cannot all run forever.
Planning a clean ending is better than pretending otherwise.
