I’ve tested my fair share of adjustable dumbbells, and whichever brand you choose, I can’t advocate for them enough. When you consider that purchasing individual pairs of dumbbells from five to 80 pounds in five-pound increments would cost well over $1,500 (and take up considerable space), investing in adjustable dumbbells is the obvious choice. And with Prime Day prices, there’s never been a better time to buy. Right now, the Cap adjustable dumbbells are available at a cheeky 30% discount, down to $208.99 from their retail price of $299.99.

Even without Prime Day discounts, these dumbbells are a strong choice on the budget end of the market. More importantly, The Cap Adjustabell system exemplifies what you should prioritize when shopping for adjustable dumbbells. The twist-and-go mechanism represents the gold standard for ease of use. Simply rotate the handle left or right while positioned on the tray to adjust the weight from 10 to 55 pounds in 5-pound increments. There are no knobs to turn, pins to align, or levers to slide—just twist and go.

Having tested several brands and models, I can attest that features like the honeycomb anti-roll design and contoured chrome handles make a huge difference in comfort. Plus, the secure storage tray addresses practical concerns about organization and safety.

Still, if you’re willing to spend a little more, my favorite adjustable dumbbells are the Nuobells. Like the Cap set, you can adjust weights with just a flick of your wrist—with zero clanking, rattling, or any other sound that strikes fear in the heart. The Nuobells are a modest 6% off right now, bringing them down to $590. That’s still a solid deal, especially compare that to splurging on something like the all-steel REP x Pepin 85-pound set for $1,099.99. On the other hand, if you’re a beginner and don’t anticipate needing more than 10-pounders, I recommend the Merach set currently marked down 15% for just $43.31.

When shopping for adjustable dumbbells, consider the weight range that matches your current and future fitness goals. Look for models with secure locking mechanisms that won’t fail mid-exercise, and pay attention to how quickly you can adjust between weights. Some systems use dial mechanisms, while others employ pin or plate systems—each has its advantages depending on your workout style, which I detail in my Nuobells review here.

Looking for something else? Retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, and Home Depot have Prime Day competition sales that are especially useful if you don’t have Amazon Prime.

  • Walmart’s Prime Day competition sale begins at midnight on July 8 and will include deals up to 50% off. It’s an especially good option if you have Walmart+.

  • Best Buy’s Prime Day competition sale, “Black Friday in July,” runs through Sunday, July 13 and has some of the best tech sales online. It’s an especially good option if you’re a My Best Buy “Plus” or “Total” member.

  • Home Depot extended its 4th of July sale through at least July 9, competing with some amazing deals of its own. It’s an especially good option if you’re looking for power tools, appliances, or outdoor equipment.
