Police said the person rang the doorbell and fled the scene. The people inside the home on Bourgeoys Street immediately called 911.

The newborn was found swaddled in a blanket and his umbilical cord still attached when he was found, according to police.

Longueuil police and paramedics provided care to the child upon arrival and he then was taken to hospital and is in good health.

Mélanie Mercille, spokesperson for the Service de police de l’agglomération de Longueuil (SPAL), said the infant was born at 34 weeks.

Mercille said she couldn’t disclose the gender of the person who left the baby at the doorstep and that in her 17-year career as an officer, she had never seen such a case.

Longueuil police said they would go door to door on Monday to determine whether anyone in the area has camera footage that could help them locate the newborn’s parents. Analyses will also be carried out to help police find the person who dropped the child off at the doorstep.
