A person died Monday morning from injuries sustained in an underground mining collapse in Saskatchewan.
The person’s name has not been released.
According to a statement issued by the Mosaic Company, the incident happened at the K3 underground mine in Esterhazy, approximately 90 kilometres southeast of Yorkto. No other injuries have been reported.
The Mosaic Company is an American chemical company based in Tampa, Florida, which mines phosphate and potash.
Mosaic’s emergency response team was called in immediately after the incident.
The company has not yet said what caused the collapse, how widespread the damage was or where in the mine the incident occurred.
The company said the site is now secured and all mining work has been halted.
A full investigation is underway and Mosaic said it’s working closely with all regulatory authorities.
The company said support services for people affected by the tragedy are being provided.
“Our thoughts go out to our colleague’s family and friends, all employees, and the broader community,” Mosaic’s statement read.
“We ask that the family be given privacy at this difficult time.”
