The Embassy of Canada to the Dominican Republic says there were Canadians involved in a tourist bus accident in the Caribbean nation on Sunday night.

A statement from the embassy posted on social media Monday said staff are providing consular assistance but did not say how many Canadians were on the bus or what their status is.

1/2 We are aware of a tourist bus accident involving Canadians in the Dominican Republic and are in contact with local authorities. We recognize the stress this situation may cause impacted individuals and loved ones and are providing consular assistance.

A WestJet spokesperson told CBC News that Sunwing customers were aboard the bus at the time of the crash, confirming that unspecified “casualties” occurred.

“Sunwing Vacations, a part of WestJet Group, can confirm a bus transferring guests from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) to their hotels via our third-party provider NexusTours’ contracted bus provider, was involved in a traffic incident,” a WestJet spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

“The incident occurred on March 1, 2026, and resulted in casualties.”

The airline said “our hearts are with the families and loved ones of those affected during this incredibly difficult time.”

WestJet also said “we are in close contact with NexusTours as well as local authorities and are actively supporting impacted guests, as well as anyone who may require assistance. “

Local media in the Dominican Republic report two deaths and at least 19 people injured in the crash, which occurred near Cumayasa, around 100 kilometres west of the popular resort area of Punta Cana.

The reports also say authorities confirmed both fatalities were foreign nationals, without confirming their citizenship.

The Canadian Press reached out to Global Affairs Canada for comment, but the department said it could not provide any additional information.

The embassy in the Dominican Republic said any Canadians needing assistance should contact the emergency watch and response centre.
