Environment Canada has issued a red tornado warning for the Gananoque, Ont., area east of Kingston. It covers other areas such as Mallorytown and Westport.
People in the affected area are asked to shelter in a basement or room away from windows, or lie in a low spot.
The warning is red, the highest level on Environment Canada’s three-colour scale, indicating life-threatening weather that could cause extreme disruption.
A warning goes out either when a tornado sighting has been reported, or when there’s sufficient evidence to suggest a tornado is on the way.
Here’s what to do during a tornado alert
Environment Canada had just ended a separate red tornado warning east of Ottawa and north of Cornwall, Ont., for communities including Clarence-Rockland, Russell and Hawkesbury.
It lasted roughly 30 minutes until 2:30 p.m. Thursday. There were no immediate reports of damage, injury or widespread outages.
