There was a search operation for two individuals in the Lachine Canal in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Emergency crews were called to the canal near René-Lévesque park in Lachine around midnight, according to Montreal fire department section chief, Kevin Francoeur.
Francoeur says it’s believed one person fell into the water and the second person entered the water in an attempt to rescue them.
Two Montreal Fire Department (SIM) boats were deployed to the scene, along with one Canadian Coast Guard vessel.
By 2 a.m., Francoeur says both individuals had been found using sonar equipment from one of the SIM boats.
Both individuals were transported to hospital in critical condition, according to Urgences-santé spokesperson Steve MacDuff.

Neither he nor Francoeur could confirm whether the two people were still alive.
The Quebec coroner’s office did not respond to CBC’s request for comment.
