A 54-year-old man has been charged in connection with an alleged bomb threat targeting the U.S. Consulate in Halifax that shut down several streets throughout the city on Monday.
Halifax Regional Police announced Tuesday morning they laid charges of uttering threats and public mischief against the man. He was scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court on Tuesday.
A news release from Halifax Regional Police said investigators became aware of a bomb threat that was received by the U.S. Consulate located in Purdy’s Wharf on Upper Water Street in Halifax on Sunday at 6:15 p.m.
The release said police identified the man who made the threat and began efforts to locate him.
Around 8:10 a.m. Monday, officers found the man’s vehicle in the Purdy’s Wharf parkade.
A propane tank and several containers believed to contain flammable liquid could be seen inside the vehicle. An explosive disposal unit was called to the scene and police evacuated several streets in the downtown core until the vehicle and its contents could be safely approached and inspected. A suspicious bag was also located nearby.
Meanwhile, the man was found on Thomas Raddall Drive near the Canada Games Centre around 8:35 a.m. and taken into custody.
The news release said given there was a concern he may be in possession of explosives, road closures were in place for much of the day on Thomas Raddall Drive and surrounding areas while his belongings were searched.
At 2 p.m., police confirmed that the vehicle at Purdy’s Wharf and its contents did not pose an ongoing risk to public safety and all streets were reopened.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Consulate said it does not comment on matters of security.
