Dr. Michael Foote confirmed the deaths in an email to CBC. He said because the investigations are open, it would be inappropriate to “share details at this time.”

Foote said all coroner’s reports become public after they are completed “in the interest of using accurate information to help prevent future deaths.”

In an email, Nunavut government spokesperson Casey Lessard said the government is responding with a “co-ordinated, multi-agency approach.”

“While we are not confirming specific details out of respect for those potentially involved, we can confirm that support is already on the ground and more is being mobilized,” Lessard wrote.

Lessard said some supports include more health workers, virtual mental health supports and logistical support for Pond Inlet.

Lessard said this was being done to “ensure youth and families are safe and cared for.”

In Pond Inlet, a community prayer session is set to be held Friday evening at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium of Nasivvik High School.
