The Royal Conservatory of Music’s Glenn Gould School (GGS) has announced the appointment of Jonathan Crow as Director of the Temerty Orchestral Program and member of the violin faculty.

The Temerty Orchestral Program is part of The Glenn Gould School, a professional degree-granting arm of The Royal Conservatory of Music. Specifically, The Temerty Program works with gifted orchestral musicians, giving them the opportunity to participate in the Royal Conservatory Orchestra (RCO) and develop their skills with noted conductors such as Tania Miller, Earl Lee, and Johannes Debus.

Crow will take up this newly created position beginning September 2026.

In the role, he’ll be working with orchestra students and guest conductors for the RCO concerts at Koerner Hall, and oversee the curriculum for the program. The RCO is one of Canada’s leading training orchestras, and the ensemble’s alumni go on to perform across the globe.

Along with his work as Director of the Temerty Orchestral Program, Jonathan will maintain a limited violin and chamber music studio at The Glenn Gould School.

Alexander Brose, the RCM’s Michael and Sonja Koerner President & CEO said in a statement, “Jonathan is a highly respected artist, known leader, and accomplished pedagogue whose connection to the RCM will only deepen with this exciting appointment. His consistent presence among our students and administration, coupled with his expertise and mentorship, will be an enormous source of inspiration. We are so excited to welcome him to our community.”

“I’m thrilled to join the faculty at one of North America’s preeminent music schools,” said Jonathan Crow. “I’ve had a special connection with The Royal Conservatory since childhood, when I took RCM exams in northern BC, and I’ve been privileged to perform often in Koerner Hall — one of the world’s great concert venues. I’m honoured now to work with the extraordinary young musicians who come from around the world to study at The Glenn Gould School.”

Tom Beck Concertmaster Chair Jonathan Crow has been Concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra since 2011, and led Toronto Summer Music as Artistic Director for nine seasons until the 2024/25 season.

He was born and grew up in Prince George, British Columbia, and studied music at McGill University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music in honours performance. After graduating, he went straight to the Associate Principal Second Violin chair with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM). In 2002, he became the then youngest concertmaster of any major North American orchestra with that orchestra.

As a guest concertmaster, he’s performed across the globe with orchestras from the National Arts Centre Orchestra (NACO) to the Pernambuco Festival Orchestra (Brazil). Jonathan has performed with orchestras across Canada as a soloist.

He’s also a dedicated chamber musician, and a founding member of the JUNO Award–winning New Orford String Quartet.

Crow brings a wealth of pedagogical experience to his new role. He’s been teaching at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University since 2005, and was appointed Associate Professor of Violin in 2010.

James Anagnoson, Dean of GGS, and Barry Shiffman, Associate Dean & Director of Chamber Music, add in a joint statement, “Jonathan brings a wealth of artistry, knowledge, and a profound commitment to supporting young musicians. This new position will give our students extraordinary access to one of the most exceptional orchestral leaders, performers, and teachers of our time.”

We wish Jonathan Crow all the best in his new adventures.
