One person is dead and two others are injured after they got hit by a REM train on Montreal’s South Shore.
Longueuil police said they received a call at around 3:10 a.m. on Saturday, at a time when no scheduled trains were running.
Provincial police confirmed three young men were struck by a REM train near the Du Quartier station. One person died at the scene and the other two are still being treated for serious and possibly life-threatening injuries.
The REM communications department told Radio-Canada the incident occurred after “an intrusion onto the tracks.”
On Saturday morning, an emergency response led to the suspension of service between Brossard and Panama stations in both directions, according to the REM. A shuttle service was put in place.
“A group of people walking attempted to cross Highway 10 and the REM tracks to reach the other side. Despite the arrival of a train, they continued walking,” Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Sgt. Ève Brochu-Joubert told CBC.
Sûreté du Québec investigators are on site to investigate the circumstances surrounding this fatal incident.
