A Calgary man who left his ex-girlfriend disabled after attacking her with a sword and cutting off three of her fingers has been placed on 30 court-ordered conditions, including an ankle monitor, designed to protect the community following the end of his prison sentence.

On Monday, Collin Dennis Ayorech, 45, consented to being placed on an 18-month peace bond.

The rare step — reserved for high-risk offenders — was taken so police can help manage Ayorech’s release and reintegration into the community.

After a person’s sentence expires, there are otherwise no court or parole board-imposed conditions in place.

A peace bond is imposed when there are reasonable grounds to fear an offence will be committed.

Ayorech’s conditions include ankle monitoring conducted by CPS’s high-risk offender unit, a no-contact order with the victim, a curfew, addictions counselling, random drug screenings and submitting to police checks and searches.

“These are very restrictive conditions, but put in place in the hope that you’ll reintegrate yourself into the community,” said Justice Harry Van Harten.

“I am both satisfied and hopeful about your agreement to this order.”

In August 2020, Ayorech was handed an eight-year sentence for his attack on his former girlfriend Dawn Warden. With credit for the time he’d already served, he had five-and-a-half years left on his sentence.

Ayorech served every day of his remaining sentence before he was released in February.

At that point, CPS issued a warning “in the interest of public safety,” alerting the public that Ayorech was out of custody.

Ayorech has a history of substance abuse and has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

On June 9, 2019, Ayorech and his then-girlfriend Warden were in Warden’s bedroom and got into an argument.

Ayorech picked up a sword and attacked Warden, cutting her shoulder, breast, ear, face, leg, stomach, and severing several fingers.

He then doused a mattress in lighter fluid, lit it on fire and forced Warden into her bedroom closet.

Warden’s teenage son was home at the time, noticed the smoke, alerted neighbours and called 911.

Together, they were able to get Warden out of the smoky room.

Warden had several surgeries after the attack.

In reviewing Ayorech’s conditions, prosecutor Karuna Ramakrishnan noted Warden “is now disabled as a result of his offences.”
