Teddy Allen, 28, was taken to hospital where he is receiving medical care, the Canadian Elite Basketball Team’s spokesperson said in a news release Monday. Team officials have visited with him there, the spokesperson said.

“Our focus is on Teddy’s health and supporting him and his family,” said the release.

The Winnipeg police major crimes unit is investigating and the organization is co-operating fully, the team said. It is declining to comment further and referred questions to police.

Police responded to a CBC inquiry by saying they were aware of the incident and are investigating, but no further information was available.

Allen, who hails from Phoenix, Arizona, is a standout scorer and all-star for the team, and was awarded the CEBL Most Valuable Player in 2023 after leading Winnipeg to the best regular-season record ever achieved by an expansion team. He left Winnipeg after that season but was was re-signed by the Sea Bears this year.

On July 19, Allen set a CEBL and franchise record for most points scored in a single game (54). That same game versus the Montreal Alliance also saw Allen set a league record for most points by a player in a season (589). Since that day his points total has increased to 667.
