Perpetuals Move Beyond Crypto
Perpetual futures became one of crypto’s defining trading products because they offer futures-style leverage without a fixed expiry date.
The structure became enormously popular on offshore exchanges for Bitcoin and altcoins.
Applying the same model to individual stocks creates something much closer to a continuously traded synthetic equity exposure.
For traders, that means the ability to take leveraged long or short positions without owning the underlying Apple, Tesla or Nvidia shares.
For regulators, it raises the obvious questions around settlement, margin, market integrity and the relationship between derivatives pricing and the underlying U.S. equity market.
Coinbase Wants The Regulated Version
The filing also fits a broader Coinbase strategy.
Rather than simply replicating offshore products outside the United States, the company has been steadily building regulated derivatives infrastructure domestically.
Its Designated Contract Market status gives it a venue through which products can be brought into the CFTC framework.
That does not guarantee approval or immediate trading, but it gives Coinbase a regulatory path that offshore perpetual exchanges historically did not have.
If the products make it through, the interesting part may be less about Apple or Tesla specifically and more about what comes next.
A regulated single-stock perpetual market could eventually expand to a much wider range of equities.
For now, though, the important point is procedural: Coinbase has filed the contracts, and the CFTC process comes before any U.S. launch.
