Will Ontario end seasonal time changes? Ford says he’s ‘all in’ — with conditions

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he’s “very open” to discussions with the new Quebec premier on whether to keep up seasonal time changes.

Quebec Premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon said last month that his government intends to abolish the twice-annual switch, but hasn’t yet decided whether to keep daylight time or standard time year-round and will consult with experts before making a final decision.

British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, northwestern Ontario and the Northwest Territories all chose this year to stick with daylight time.

Asked whether the rest of Ontario would follow suit, Ford says he’s “easy going.”

Ford says he’s “all in” if not only Quebec, but also New York and the “eastern corridor of the U.S.” agreed.

More Canadian provinces are ending time changes. What does it mean for your health?

Permanent daylight time would push Toronto’s winter solstice sunrise to around 8:45 a.m. and sunset to around 5:45 p.m.

A move to darker winter mornings has drawn criticism from some sleep experts, with a recent analysis from the Canadian Medical Association Journal favouring permanent standard time instead.
